Scooters are how backpackers see Thailand — Pai's waterfalls, Koh Phangan's beaches, Chiang Mai's mountain loops. They're cheap (200-300 THB/day), easy to rent, and the leading cause of foreigner deaths and injuries in Thailand. Most of this comes down to two things: police checks and voided insurance.
Do you need an IDP to rent a scooter in Thailand?
Legally, yes. Thai law requires foreigners to hold an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement on the underlying domestic licence. A car-only licence does not qualify you to ride a scooter, even a 110cc one. Most backpackers ride without either — and most get away with it until they don't.
How long is your IDP valid in Thailand?
Up to 1 year from entry under the 1968 Vienna Convention. The endorsement on your IDP must match your domestic licence — if your home licence doesn't cover motorcycles, no IDP will.
What documents must you carry while riding?
Always have on you when riding:
- Original domestic licence with motorcycle endorsement
- International Driving Permit
- Passport or a clear photo
- Helmet (legally required — 500 THB fine without)
- Rental contract
What about the police checkpoints?
Roadblocks in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pai, Koh Samui, and tourist islands are routine — sometimes daily. They specifically target foreign riders. Fines without an IDP:
- No IDP: 500-1,000 THB
- No helmet: 500 THB
- No licence at all: 1,000+ THB
- Wrong endorsement (car-only IDP riding a bike): same as no licence
You can usually pay on the spot, get a receipt, and ride away.
Can you rent a scooter without an IDP?
Almost every small rental shop will hand you a key for your passport as deposit. They don't check anything. This is what makes the insurance problem so insidious.
The insurance truth backpackers learn the hard way
If you crash:
- Travel insurance is void if you weren't legally licensed to ride. World Nomads, SafeWing, Allianz, etc. all have this clause.
- Hospital bills are paid by you, in cash, before discharge — typically 50,000-500,000 THB.
- You may be held personally liable for damage to the bike, other vehicles, and property.
- Many shops keep your passport until you pay for damage.
The fix is simple and cheap: get the IDP with motorcycle endorsement before you travel. The peace of mind is worth more than the cost.
Tips for backpackers riding in Thailand
- Always wear a helmet — even short rides.
- Don't drink and ride — even one beer voids insurance.
- Avoid riding at night — visibility is poor and other drivers more dangerous.
- Photograph the bike at pickup — scratch claims are common.
- Use Google Maps offline — signal drops in mountains.
